BACKGROUND TO THE ISSUE AND SPECIAL ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
A key mission of the International Association for Research in Income and
Wealth (IARIW) is to bring together researchers from around the world to advance
understanding of issues related to income and wealth. The biennial General
Conference is the main venue for this interaction, but the Association also orga-
nizes two smaller special conferences in non-General Conference years. Special
conferences focus on a specific topic or region, and often serve an outreach func-
tion to parts of the world where the IARIW is not well-known. A selection of
refereed papers from these conferences are published in supplementary issues of
the Association’s journal, the Review of Income and Wealth.
This supplementary issue contains articles from the two special confer-
ences of 2017. The first, entitled “Beyond GDP: Experiences and Challenges in
Measuring Economic Well-being,” was co-organized with the Bank of Korea and
was held in Seoul on April 26–28, 2017. Martine Durand, Chief Statistician at
the OECD, and Francois Bourguignon from the Paris School of Economics and
former Chief Economist at the World Bank, gave keynote addresses, and a clos-
ing panel considered future directions for research in well-being measurement.
The 30 papers presented can be found at http://www.iariw.org/c2017korea.php.
The second special conference, entitled “Past Experiences and Future Challenges
in Measuring Income, Inequality and Poverty in South Asia,” was co-organized
with the International Council for Research on International Economic Relations
(ICRIER) and took place in Delhi, India, November 23–25, 2017. Martin Rama,
Chief Economist at the World Bank for South Asia, gave a keynote address, and a
closing panel considered challenges facing national statistical offices in South Asia.
The 30 papers presented can be found at http://www.iariw.org/c2017India.php.
The IARIW would like to thank the Bank of Korea for hosting the confer-
ence in Seoul and Taehyoung Cho from the Bank of Korea for overseeing the local
arrangements. The Association also thanks Andrea Brandolini from the Bank
of Italy for chairing the Program Committee, and Andrew Clark from the Paris
School of Economics and Andrea Brandolini for guest editing the papers from the
Seoul conference in this supplementary issue.
The IARIW would like to thank the ICRIER for hosting the conference in
Delhi and Deb Kusum Das from the University of Delhi and ICRIER for over-
seeing the local arrangements. The Association also thanks Deb Kusum Das and
Barbara Fraumeni both for co-chairing the Program Committee and for guest edit-
ing the Delhi conference papers in this supplementary issue.
