The Bach Book: 40th Anniversary Album: Jacques Loussier Trio (Telarc Jazz CD 83474)

This could be a little confusing, so please bear with me. French pianist Jacques Loussier released his original Bach-oriented recording with his first Bach-oriented jazz trio, the Play Bach Trio, in 1959, so this 1999 Telarc release does indeed mark the 40th anniversary of that occasion, although it is not by the same group (except of course for Loussier). However, this recording was not made in 1999 by his current trio (the group that made the Ravel and Satie discs that I have reviewed previously in these pages); rather, it was made a few years ago by an earlier version of his current trio (sadly enough, the bass player on this recording, Vincent Charbonnier, suffered a debilitating stroke a couple of years ago and was no longer able to play with the group). I have heard some of Loussier's older Bach albums, and have never been able to really get into them, for they always seemed to be not quite jazz, not quite...
