B. Service Abroad
For a servicemember stationed in a foreign country who is unwilling to accept service and waive formal service of the summons, counsel may effect service of process by utilizing the Hague Convention on the Service Abroad of Judicial and Extra-Judicial Documents in Civil and Commercial Matters. The Hague Service Convention became effective in the United States in 1969. There are currently 82 member nations, with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia being the most recent member as of October 19, 2016. By ascribing to the Convention, countries agree to reciprocity of a number of uniform laws with the other countries that adopted the Convention and to implement and enforce those uniform laws in their country.
