SYDNEY, Australia, Sept. 14--Next September, when the 2000 Summer Games, the largest event in the history of sports, get under way here, billions of dollars, national pride, and international prestige will all be at stake.

The Sydney Olympics, from September 15 through October 1, will include a record number of sports (28), events (292), and athletes (10,200). Many events will take place in Stadium Australia, the largest arena in Olympic history, which will hold 110,000 spectators.
