Atlanta Chapter: strong technical programs, outstanding networking.

On November 10, 2011, the Atlanta Chapter held a half-day seminar on Federal Tax Topics, which was presented by subject matter experts from Grant Thornton. The seminar was held at Maggiano's--Cumberland and was very well attended with over 100 members and guests in attendance. The morning session featured a discussion of mergers and acquisitions led by Russ Daniel, managing director of M&A tax services in the form's Charlotte office, and Jim Kelleher, a senior manager in the Atlanta office.

The next two topics discussed were top IRS "triggers," which was presented by Susan Pick, managing director of corporate strategic federal tax services in the Atlanta office; and Section 382 hot topics, which were covered by Greg Fairbanks, a senior manager in corporate tax in the Washington, D.C., office. The seminar concluded with a discussion of provision pitfalls by Ted Thomas, tax partner in the Atlanta office. Atlanta Chapter officers Ben Turner and Thomas Bynum were responsible for the excellent planning and coordination of this seminar.

On November 15, Kirk Lyda, a partner in the Dallas office of Jones Day, was the guest speaker for the Atlanta Chapter's monthly luncheon. The topic of the meeting was "Single Sales Factor and Market Sourcing." Mr. Lyda discussed how the states have trended toward single sales apportionment and market sourcing, the proper sourcing of services and intangibles, and tax implications and planning opportunities.
