In the first paragraph of his Editor's Note, Matthew Rothschild didn't hesitate to mention that he is an atheist ("Thank You Notes," Note, January issue). I found his casual disclosure of his atheism courageous and inspiring. How many of us closet nonbelievers could expose so candidly our freedom of conscience?

Since the Holy Inquisition is no longer, our silence has nothing to do with fear. I guess we just don't want to make waves.
