It is unusual for a doctoral dissertation to be published forty years after its completion, but the appearance of R. L. Litke's 1958 Yale work on two of the most important Mesopotamian "encyclopedias" of divine names, done under the direction of Ferris J. Stephens and in consultation with Benno Landsberger, is well justified. Because the author did not pursue an academic career, he made no effort to disseminate his edition. Unavailable from University Microfilms, the dissertation has been used up until now by only a few Assyriologists fortunate enough to have access to the original manuscript. Others interested in this material have been waiting for W. G. Lambert's long-awaited comprehensive study of the Assyro-Babylonian god-lists, in which it will be included.

Since it has become apparent that Lambert's work will not soon appear, William W. Hallo, of Yale, with the agreement of both Litke and Lambert, has issued the unrevised text of the dissertation in the series Texts from the Babylonian Collection.
