Foreign ministers and representatives of the 33 active members of the OAS gathered in Lima, Peru recently to debate the region's priorities and to discuss the programs and initiatives their governments have developed on the central theme of the 40th OAS General Assembly: "Peace, Security, and Cooperation in the Americas."

The topics analyzed by the top diplomats of the Americas and the Caribbean in the June 6-8, 2010 meeting included: progress made towards building mutual trust among countries; citizen security; the Inter-American Democratic Charter; and the institutional strengthening of the OAS.

Secretary General José Miguel Insulza affirmed that this "was an excellent and productive assembly with good results. It was a high-level and respectful dialogue and yielded agreements that reflect the fact that the OAS is a space for high quality debate in spite of the differences that may exist between its members. In summary, it was a good general assembly, excellently organized by the government of Peru, and we are grateful to Peru for all its efforts towards making this event a reality." Insulza also stated that "Opening up a path towards resolving the situation in Honduras is very important for Hondurans and for our organization.
