Special Assistant to the Under Secretary of Defense (Comptroller)
Sandra A. Gregory heads the Financial Workforce Management Office, leading special studies and directing projects related to financial management, including the Department of Defense's (DoD) leadership role in establishing the Chief Financial Officer Academy for the Federal Government. She helps identify unique financial challenges and proposes solutions and conducts evaluations of DoD-wide issues to support management decision making, including the Strategic Human Capital Management Program. She is the Functional Community Manager for the 50,000 people in DoD financial management.
In her 29 years of military service, Ms. Gregory served in a variety of financial management positions throughout the DoD. Her last assignment as a military officer was as the Deputy Director of Budget Operations and Personnel, Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Financial Management and Comptroller, Washington, D.C. She retired as a brigadier general. Before returning to the DoD, she was vice president, Financial and Cost Management, at CALIBRE in Alexandria, Virginia.
Ms. Gregory is the ASMC Chairperson for the Certified Defense Financial Management Commission.
What is the primary mission of the office you lead the Under Secretary of Defense (Comptroller) Office of Financial Workforce Management?
The Office of Financial Workforce Management was created in April 2009 by the Under Secretary of Defense (Comptroller)/CFO, the Honorable Robert F Hale, to assist the Department of Defense Financial Management (DoD FM) workforce and to be the career field Functional Community Manager. The direction we received was to work with the Components to monitor recruiting, retention, and training in the FM career field. In other words, this office serves as the FM community's advocate to ensure that the workforce has the competencies, capacity, and tools to acquire, develop, and sustain the talent needed to meet the Department's current and future mission requirements. Additionally, we plan and execute special projects for the Under Secretary.
