Arctic Slope Construction, Inc.

PositionEnvironmental remediation contracts - Company Profile

Few Alaska companies can boast of being in business for two months and having annual revenues approaching $10 million. But environmental remediation contractor Arctic Slope Construction, Inc. can safely make that claim since it has in fact been operating in the Alaska market since 1994.

Confused? Lewis R. Ivers, P.E., Alaska Regional Manager for ASCI explained that it's less about being a completely new company than it is a homecoming for this subsidiary of Arctic Slope Regional Corp.

The company originated as ASRC Contracting Co., Inc. Chartered by ASRC in 1992 in Sacramento, California, ACCI was part of the corporation's strategic plan to diversify its interests in the Lower 48.

Its present incarnation as a fully Alaskan company became official this year, Ivers said, following the consolidation of three of its parent corporation's subsidiaries.

"Our largest customer in the Alaska region has been the Air Force," he said. "We have a five-year, $23 million tank and soil remediation contract with the Air Force Center for Environmental Excellence to support Alaska projects. The company received the AFCEE contract award in the Fall of 1994.

Over the course of four years, ASCI has worked on projects at Elmendorf and Eielson Air Force bases and at several remote locations from Galena to Cape Lisburne. These remote project sites are typically only accessible by air or by barge.

"That AFCEE contract was really the beginning of this office," Ivers recollects. "We have grown from working exclusively for AFCEE to working for a variety of clients."

"And among those projects we have affiliated with national companies such as EMCON. We were a subcontractor to EMCON at Manning Point on Barter Island and in this upcoming season we will be working again with EMCON at Kaktovik on a drum cleanup.

Other projected work for the 1998 season includes Elmendorf AFB, Galena, Cape Lisburne, Sparrvohn and Eielson AFB.

Ivers is quick to point out that ASCI is mostly in the construction end of the environmental clean-up business. "We are an environmental remediation company," he explained. "Although ASCI has many of the diagnostic and problem-solving capabilities of environmental science companies, we are principally a remedial construction company

"We perform hazardous waste cleanups. We also perform a lot of soil contamination remediation and quite a lot of underground storage tank work - removing and replacing them and installing tank ancillary equipment."
