The late Jim Sauer laid the foundations of the American Center of Oriental Research at Amman and thus inaugurated an unprecedented boom for American archaeology in Jordan. After serving more than a normal term of office in the capital of Jordan, he went on to undertake possibly even more pioneering work in Yemen's Wadi al-Juba. The present collection of essays well reflects his impact on colleagues, pupils, and friends.
