The book presents a catalogue of about six hundred inscriptions in Mesopotamian Aramaic found in northern Mesopotamia, mainly in Hatra and Assur, but also in Dura-Europos, Gaddala, Takrit, Qabr Abu Naif, [Abrat.sup.[subset]] al-Sagira, [Sa.sup.[subset]] adiya, and various localities of the Tur [Abdin.sup.[subset]]. Chronologically, the material dates from the middle of the first century B.C. through the mid-third century A.D. These inscriptions, mainly honorific and commemorative, are classified according to provenience and assigned identification numbers. For each inscription, the text is given in a standardized Hatraean script, followed by a phonetic transcription into the Latin alphabet--with vocalization, indication of spirantization of bgdkpt and of doubled letters--and finally by a translation into German. There follows a grammar (pp. 121-40) and indexes of subjects, dates, months, gods and goddesses, persons, places, and a full list of words with meanings and occurrences.
