An April poll conducted by National Public Radio, the Kaiser Family Foundation, and the Harvard School of Public Health revealed the public does not seem to be as optimistic about electronic health records (EHRs) as lawmakers.

To be considered for a job with the city of Bozeman, Mont., applicants must provide more than just their resume. The city also requires applicants to turn over their user names and passwords for any social networking websites they frequent.

The city's application form states: "Please list any and all current personal or business websites, web pages, or memberships on any Internet-based chat rooms, social clubs or forums, to include, but not limited to: Facebook, Google, Yahoo, YouTube.com, MySpace, etc."

City officials say the information is used only to verify data listed on job seekers' applications, and applicants who refuse to provide the information are not excluded from consideration. However, critics, including the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), say the policy violates applicants' privacy.

"I liken it to them saying they want to look at your love letters and your family photos," Amy Cannata, with the ACLU of Montana, told the Associated Press. "I think this policy certainly crosses the privacy line."
