Western Political Science
Association (WPSA)
You Are Invited to the WPSAs Birthday
Celebration!
The Western Political Science Association is turning
75 years young in 2022! We are planning a major cele-
bration of this event at our annual meeting and we invite
you to join us. While the deadline has passed for sub-
mitting paper and panel proposals, you are still welcome
to attend the conference and the numerous events related
to the anniversary celebration.
The 2022 Annual Meeting of the WPSA is scheduled
for March 10-12, 2022, at the Downtown Hilton in
Portland, Oregon. WPSA President Ricardo Ramirez,
Program Chair Pei-te Lien, and the 75th Anniversary
Planning Committee are putting together the program and
special events for the 2022 Annual Meeting.
There will be a variety of panels related to the con-
ferences theme, which is closely tied to the anniversary
celebration. The theme calls for papers that look both back
and forward. The Call for Papers asks, what role can we
political scientists play, as individuals and as members of
an association now reaching the golden age of 75, to help
chart paths to rebuild, reconcile, and recover,a besieged
and dangerously divided nation? How can our research
and teaching contribute to lighting up the new dawn?
What is the new dawn for WPSA? Under what circum-
stances will it bloom? For the complete Call for Papers,
see the associations website (https://www.wpsanet.org/
meeting/call.php).
In addition, there will also be themed panels directly
related to the anniversary in which members will be
presenting and discussing papers that tell the story of
WPSA-related groups and articulate each groupscon-
tributions to the discipline of political science past,
present, and future.
Other events include an anniversary banquet and dance
on Friday night (March 11) and a large reception honoring
WPSA award winners and others (including recent re-
tirees) on Thursday evening.
To f‌ind out more details about the conference and other
anniversary-related activities, visit the WPSAs website
and watch your email inbox. Please try to join us in
Portland! You can register in advance for a reduced rate.
The WPSA 75th Anniversary Project: Help
Support Others
The Western Political Science Association has long prided
itself in providing an inclusive home for political sci-
entists, one that is open to a broad range of cutting-edge
research and scholars from diverse backgrounds. Many
political scientists feel a special bond with the WPSA
because of its openness to others and to different
perspectives.
Yetthere is one area in which the WPSA has been poor
in promoting inclusiveness. Unlike many other political
science associations, the WPSA does not have a fund to
help underwrite the cost for graduate students and less
well-off faculty to attend the annual meeting. Every year,
the association receives requests for f‌inancial assistance
from participants, which we cannot provide. As a con-
sequence, some individuals who would like to participate
in the annual meeting are unable to afford it.
As part of the WPSAs 75th anniversary, the associ-
ation is launching a fund-raising campaign to create a
travel endowment, which will provide support to help
graduate students and faculty so they can attend the annual
meeting. Please consider contributing to the WPSA Travel
Fund. It will provide much-needed support to others so
they can join us at the annual meeting and make us more
inclusive.
There are other ways in which you can help the WPSA.
In addition to creating this Travel Fund, the WPSA is also
using the anniversary as a means to build f‌inancial support
for association awards. Currently, only two of our annual
best paper awards are self-funded, with the rest relying on
limited support from the associations annual budget. The
association would like to see all the awards eventually
become self-funded to ensure their long-term survival and
to build the dollar size of each award, which has remained
unchanged for more than a decade. The WPSA is asking
members to consider donating to the individual award
funds.
If you just want to provide help to the association to
ensure its long-term viability and to build a base for
