Western Political Science
Association (WPSA)
The WPSA is Having a Birthday Celebration
and You Are Invited!
The Western Political Science Association is turning 75
years young in 2022! We are planning a major celebration
of this event and we invite you to participate.
For many of us, WPSA annual meetings are the most
enjoyable professional gatherings we have experienced.
As an association of teachers, students, scholars, and other
professionals, it seems to us unparalleled in the discipline
in its intellectual stimulation and collaboration, in its spirit
of inclusivity, and in its critical political consciousness
and intervention. We hope you share our appreciation for
this unique professional organization, and that you’re
excited to commemorate this amazing organization’s con-
tributions to political studies at next year’s annual meet-
ing. We’re planning multiple events and activities to
celebrate, and we hope you will join in. Here’s what’s
planned so far, and how you can participate:
Annual Conference
There will many special events associated with the anni-
versary at the 2022 Annual Meeting of the WPSA, which
is scheduled for March 10-12, 2022, in Portland, Oregon.
WPSA President Ricardo Ramirez, Program Chair Pei-te
Lien, and the 75th Anniversary Planning Committee are
putting together the program and special events at the
2022 Annual Meeting.
Call for papers. While we will be celebrating the anniver-
sary in Portland, the theme of the conference focuses on
both looking back and forward. The Call for Papers asks,
“what role can we political scientists play, as individuals
and as members of an association now reaching the
golden age of 75, to help chart paths to ‘rebuild, recon-
cile, and recover,’ a besieged and dangerously divided
nation? How can our research and teaching contribute to
light up the new dawn? What is the new dawn for WPSA?
Under what circumstances will it bloom?” For the full
Call for Papers, visit the WPSA’s website at: https://www.
wpsanet.org/meeting/call.php. The deadline for proposal
is mid-September, so look soon.
Anniversary panels. In addition to papers and panels
related to the Call for Papers, we will also have themed
panels in which members will write, present, and discuss
papers that tell the story of WPSA-related groups and
articulate each group’s contributions to the discipline of
political science – past, present and future. After the 2022
annual meeting we hope to collect, edit, and publish the
papers in either an edited book or in a special journal
issue that will serve as a permanent memorial to the
unique strengths and contributions of WPSA.
We invite and encourage you to collaborate with your
colleagues in your favorite section or other affiliated
group to propose a theme panel along these lines. And if
you participate in writing a paper, it could be a chance for
another publication.
Conference banquet and dance. To celebrate our associa-
tion’s 75th anniversary, we’re planning a banquet and
dance on Friday night (March 11) of the annual meeting.
Plan to attend! Have some fun!
Other conference events. We’re also planning other pos-
sible events to celebrate the anniversary, including a field
trip or two. Visit the WPSA’s website and watch your
email inbox for more information. Please try to attend!
WPSA 75th Anniversary Webpage
As this edition of Political Research Quarterly was going
to press, we hadn’t yet worked out all the details for the
association’s anniversary webpage. But our plan is to
have one central webpage with links to specific pages:
Graffiti wall. On this page we will ask you to post a short
message on what WPSA has meant to you and to your
career. Has WPSA made a difference in your professional
life? How?
Histories page. On this page we will post stories of the
beginnings, historical trajectories, and future plans of some
of WPSA’s most notable sections and affiliated groups. We
invite you to collaborate with colleagues in these groups to
write up an account or record a brief video narrative of
your group’s work in the WPSA and its contributions to the
teaching and/or learning of political science.
