Francisco
The 2018 meeting of the WPSA will be held at the Hyatt
Regency in San Francisco, California, from Thursday,
March 29 through Saturday, March 31, 2018. The pro-
gram is expected to have strong turnout, with 299 panels
currently scheduled from Thursday morning to Saturday
afternoon. In addition to the regular panels, there are six
mini-conferences taking place within our conference:

Policing
Care Ethics
Asian Pacific American Politics
Community College: Teaching, Assessment and
Research
Teaching and Learning
As in previous years, there will also be workshops on
Environmental Political Theory, Feminist Theory,
Interpretive Methods and Methodologies, and Latino
Politics on the day before the conference (Wednesday,
March 28).
Jane Junn, University of Southern California, is serv-
ing as Program Chair for this meeting. Melissa
Michelson, Menlo College, and Marcela Garcia-
Castanon, San Francisco State University, are serving as
co-chairs of the Local Arrangements Committee.
Information about the conference, including its theme
and the list of section chairs, is available on the WPSA
website: www.wpsanet.org.
Changes in the WPSA Executive Council
Stephen Nicholson, University of California, Merced, is
serving as WPSA President through the March 2018 meet-
ings. At the conclusion of the meetings, Jann Junn,
University of Southern California, will assume the presi-
dency of the WPSA. Jamie Mayerfeld, University of
Washington, will become the new Program Chair. The fol-
lowing individuals have been elected to the Executive
Council for the term 2018–2021: Lan Chu, Occidental
College; Farah Godrej, University of California, Riverside;
Tony Carey, University of North Texas; and Mario Feit,
Georgia State University. Their terms begin immediately
prior to the March 2018 meeting. The terms of the follow-
ing Executive Council members will conclude immedi-
ately prior to the San Francisco meeting: Teena Gabrielson,
University of Wyoming; Tiffiany Howard, University of
Nevada, Las Vegas; and Jennifer Wilking, California State
University, Chico. The Association thanks them for their
valuable service.
Planning Begins for 2019 Annual Meetings but
with a Change of Venue
The WPSA’s 2019 conference was originally scheduled
to be held in San Antonio, Texas. In June 2017, however,
California Attorney General Xavier Becerra placed a ban
on state-funded travel to Texas because of the state’s dis-
criminatory LGBT laws. The WPSA Executive Council
voted at its meeting in August to respond to the ban and
to Texas’s discriminatory policies by relocating the con-
ference to California. During the summer, the Association
canceled its 2019 contract with the Hyatt Regency San
Antonio and signed a new contract with the Manchester
Hyatt in San Diego. The conference along the beautiful
waterfront in San Diego will be held on April 18 to 20,
2019.
The Program Committee for the 2019 WPSA annual
meetings is now being formed by the incoming Program
Chair, Jamie Mayerfeld, University of Washington. A
listing of the 2019 Program Committee will appear by
June on the WPSA website. The University of San Diego
has agreed to serve as the local host.
Following the San Diego conference, the schedule for
future meetings is as follows: the J.W. Marriott at L.A.
Live in 2020 and the brand-new Hyatt Regency in Seattle,
Washington, in 2021. The WPSA Executive Council has
begun to consider locations for the 2022 conference. The
WPSA will be celebrating its seventy-fifth anniversary in
2022, so the Council would like to choose a location which
would be especially appealing to potential attendees.
