Western Political Science
Association (WPSA)
Call for Editors of Political Research
Quarterly
Western Political Science Association President Jessica
Lavariega Monforti appointed a search committee over the
summer for a new editor or team of editors for the Political
Research Quarterly. The term of the current editors—Seth
C. McKee, Toby J. Rider, Frank C. Thames, Sophia Jordán
Wallace, and David Lay Williams—will expire on June 30,
2022. The association is seeking nominations of qualified
individuals who would edit the journal from July 1, 2022,
through June 30, 2026. This four-year term is renewable
for a two-year optional extension. Nominations and self-
nominations are both welcome. The WPSA encourages
nominations of women and members of ethnic minorities.
The formal Call for Editors is posted on the WPSA website
(www.wpsanet.org). Check the website for more details
about the position and the application process.
WPSA 2021 Meeting Goes Hybrid
The 2021 meeting of the Western Political Science
Association is scheduled to be held at the Hyatt Regency
in Seattle, Washington, from April 1 to 3. Because of the
continuing concerns over COVID-19 and the fiscal chal-
lenges facing many universities, the WPSA is going to be
using a hybrid model for the conference, allowing partici-
pants to either participate in person in Seattle or in virtual
panels. Ricardo Ramirez, University of Notre Dame, is
serving as program chair. University of Washington
Professors Laura Evans and Rebecca Thorpe are serving
as local arrangements co-chairs.
Information regarding the conference, its theme, and
the list of section chairs are available on the WPSA web-
site: www.wpsanet.org. In addition to the main program,
several workshops are being organized for Wednesday,
March 30. There will also be several mini-conferences
held during the meeting. Information on these special
events can be found on the website.
Even though the deadline for paper proposals has
passed, there are still ways to participate actively in the
annual meeting, whether in person or online. Any com-
mittees, caucuses, subject-matter sections, or other
groups wishing to schedule sessions or workshops during
the WPSA meetings and who have not already done so
should contact WPSA Associate Director, Elsa Favila, as
soon as possible at favilaej@csus.edu.
In addition, if you are part of a research community
that is interested in holding a meeting in the spring, we
may still be able to accommodate your group by coordi-
nating a mini-conference within our conference. The
association does not charge for providing the space and
support for these mini-conference, though the attendees
are required to register for the WPSA meeting. There is
also the opportunity to host receptions, business meet-
ings, and special events at the annual conference. Finally,
some section chairs are likely to be looking for individu-
als wanting to serve as discussants and panel chairs. Just
write them if you are interested.
Pre-registration and hotel information is available now
on the WPSA website. It is possible to pre-register and
pay by credit card at this site: http://wpsanet.org.
WPSA Begins Planning 75th Anniversary
Celebration
The Western Political Science Association is excited to
announce that it will be celebrating its 75th anniversary at
the association’s March 2022 annual conference in
Portland, Oregon. In November 1947, the first meeting of
the WPSA took place at the University of Utah in Salt
Lake City. At that meeting, a constitution was adopted and
the first officers elected. On December 29, 1947, the
American Political Science Association formally accepted
the WPSA as a regional group. In 1995, the WPSA became
an independent non-profit public benefit corporation.
The WPSA Executive Council has created an ad hoc
committee to begin planning for the big event. The com-
mittee is filled with a stellar roster of past WPSA presi-
dents and long-time active members. The committee will
be working closing with Pei-te Lien, University of
California, Santa Barbara, who is the program chair for
the 2022 conference. The members of the planning com-
mittee are: Ron Schmidt (chair), California State
University, Long Beach; Louis DeSipio, University of
California, Irvine; Ange-Marie Hancock, University of
Southern California; Rodney Hero, University of California,
Berkeley; Jane Junn, University of Southern California;
Valerie Martinez-Ebers, University of North Texas; Gary
Segura, University of California, Los Angeles; and
Richard Clucas, Western Political Science Association.
We are expecting a fantastic meeting and celebration,
so stay tuned!
