WESTERN POLITICAL SCIENCE ASSOCIATION
Valerie Martinez-Ebers, Texas Christian University, will
serve as Program Chair and President-elect of the Western
Political Science Association for the 2006 annual meeting in
Albuquerque, New Mexico, March 16 – 18. She will suc-
ceed current WPSA President, Ron Schmidt, Sr., California
State University, Long Beach.
Peter Steinberger, Reed College, was elected to the Pro-
gram Chair-elect position. He will serve as Program Chair
for the 2007 program in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The following individuals were elected to the Executive
Council for the term 2006–2009: Region A: Kristin Hill
Maher, San Diego State University; John Meyer, Humboldt
State University; Region B: Ted Jelen, University of Nevada,
Las Vegas; Region C: Richard Clucas, Portland State University.
The terms of the following Council members expired in
March 2005: Anne Costain, University of Colorado; Victoria
Farrar-Myers, University of Texas, Arlington; Al Harris,
Humboldt State University; and Mark Petracca, University
of California, Irvine.
Dvora Yanow, California State University, Hayward,
served as Local Arrangements Chairs and provided mem-
bers with an especially fine set of meeting arrangements for
our 2005 meeting in Oakland.
The March 2006 meeting of the Association will be held
at the Hyatt Regency Albuquerque in Albuquerque, New
Mexico. Information regarding the conference, its theme,
and the section chairs was recently mailed to all WPSA
members. The information is also available on the WPSA

Recipients of 2005 WPSA Awards
The following WPSA awards were presented by the
Association at the 2005 Annual Meeting held in Oakland,
California:
The Pi Sigma Alpha Award for the best paper given at the
2005 Annual Meeting of the WPSA was awarded to Walter
Stone, University of California, Davis; Sarah Fulton, Uni-
versity of California, Davis; Sandy Maisel, Colby College,
and Cherie Maestas, Texas Tech University for their paper:
“Prospects, Money, Candidate Entry, and Vote Share in US
House Elections: What’s Causing What?”
The Dissertation Award was given to Dr. Jeffrey F. Tim-
mons, Instituto Tecnologico Autonomo de Mexico for his Dis-
sertation: “The Fiscal Contract: States, Taxes, and Public Ser-
vices,” completed at: the University of California, San Diego.
The award for the best paper on Blacks and Politics was
given to Professor Mark Q. Sawyer, University of California,
Los Angeles for his paper: “DuBois’ Double Consciousness
Versus Latin American Exceptionalism: Joe Arroyo, Salsa
and Negritude.”
The Betty Nesvold Award was given to Ki-young Shin ,
University of Washington for her paper: “Movement with-
out Activism: Japanese Women’s Family Law Reform Move-
ment since the 1980s.”
The award for the best paper on Latina/Latino Politics
was given to Professor Lisa Garcia Bedolla and Becki Scola
University of California, Irvine, for their paper: “Race, Con-
nectedness and The Charles Redd award for the best paper
on the politics of the American West was given to Professors
Joe Bowersox and Karen Arabas, Willamette University for
their paper: “People, Fire and Scale: Obstacles to Ecosystem
Management.”
The award for the best article published in the Political
Research Quarterly during the previous calendar year was
given to Professor Natalia Letki, Nuffield College, Oxford
for her December 2004 PRQ article, “Socialization for Par-
ticipation? Trust, Membership and Democratization in East-
Central Europe.”
Submissions for 2006 WPSA Awards
Instructions and deadlines for paper submissions for
2006 WPSA awards may be found on the WPSA website.
Please note that the deadlines for most awards are set for
June 15, 2005.
WPSA Nominations
The WPSA Committee on Nominations requests that
nominations be submitted for the following WPSA officer
positions:
A. Vice President: to serve as Program Chair 2007-2008
and for the March 2008 annual meeting. This individual
will serve as Association President 2008-2009 subsequent
to service as Program Chair.
B. Four members of the Executive Council: two from
Region A (California); one from Region B (Arizona, Hawaii,
Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Utah); and one from Region C
(Alaska, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington,
Wyoming, British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan).
Terms will be for three years, 2007-2010.
All terms will commence at the end of the meeting in
March 2007.
Nominations of women and members of ethnic minorities
are encouraged. The committee also encourages nominations
that will help achieve a balance of large and small schools,
areas of specialization, and regions in WPSA governance.
