André Vanoli devotednearly all his professional life

to national accounts, becoming one of the great

developers of what has been described as one of the

major discoveries of the 20th century

André Vanoli was born on October 22,

1930. After obtaining the diploma of

the well-known Institut d’Études Poli-

tiques, he was recruited in 1957 by

SEEF,a department of the French Min-

istry of Economy in charge of the rst

national accounts for France, where he

developed and pioneered input/output

accounts. He then joined the French

statistical ofce, INSEE, where he had

a brilliant career. He was rst head

of the department for Statistical and

Accounting Coordination, then secre-

tary general of the Conseil National de

l’Information Statistique, and, nally,

director of Statistical and Accounting

Coordination and External Relations.

Early on, André Vanoli par-

ticipated in the development of the

European version of the 1968 System of

National Accounts (SNA)thatbecame

the European System of Economic

Accounts (ESA) and helped establish

duality, that later became systematic, between the world wide SNA and the ESA.

He coordinated the reworking of the French accounts to bring them into full con-

sistency with the SNA 1968 and ESA 1970.

During this time, he quickly became recognized internationally as an expert in

national accounting. He was a long-standing member of the International Associa-

tion of Research in Income and Wealth (IARIW) and was chairman of the associa-

tion between 1977 and 1979. Participants at numerousmeetings of the IARIW will

remember his many contributions and always relevant commentaries.

André Vanoli was one of the ve core experts who ensured the internal con-

sistency of the 1993 version of the SNA. When the enormity of the task of not

just updating the 1968 version but of incorporating several associated handbooks

became evident, André offered to assist with the drafting. He produced the chapter

that gives a comprehensive overview of the whole system as well as the chapters on

applications and on satellite accounts.
