Edward P. Jones should keep his best suit pressed and an acceptance speech handy. He most recently won the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award, presented September 7 in Cleveland, for his first novel The Known World (Amistad, August 2003), the story about a slave owning African American family.

The awards, administered by The Cleveland Foundation, recognize books "that have made important contributions to our understanding of racism or our appreciation of the rich diversity of human cultures."
