Guide TO determining the validity of write-in ballot

(The following guide is meant as an aid in assisting a fire district board of election in whether to count or void a write-in ballot. The public purpose behind a write- ballot is to assure the right of voters to be safeguarded against disenfranchisement and to have their intent implemented wherever reasonably possible. The fire district’s local board of elections should evaluate and determine whether the write-in ballot should be counted. The fire district’s local board of elections may seek the assistance of the county board of elections if their assistance is needed. Consultation with the county board of election and with fire district counsel is encouraged.
