I was at first sad and then disturbed while reading Liz Seegert's fine piece featuring author and educator Dale McGowan ("Ethical Education Starts with Curiosity," July/August 2014). Once again the "elephant in the room" of corporal punishment wasn't mentioned.

In any discussion of differences between styles of parenting, secular humanism must point out the gross inequality of giving parents a pass to assault their children. We need to remind everyone that children all over this country are still being hit and made to feel pain so they will behave. Also, believe it or not, nineteen states still use the paddle in some of their school districts.

The most common justification for spanking and paddling is "the Bible tells us so," but serious biblical scholars say proverbs...
