When the St. Louis-based Army Aviation and Troop Command fell to the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) ax in 1997, it moved to Redstone Arsenal, near Huntsville, Ala., where it became part of the Aviation and Missile Command (AMCOM).
Other segments of the command merged with TRACOM (Transportation Command), headquartered near Detroit, and soldier-related services were absorbed by the Soldier Systems Command, in Natick, Mass.
