Every year the Detroit Regional Chamber's Ambassador Committee chooses an outstanding committee member who best exemplifies the qualities of the ambassador program. The Ambassador of the Year for 2010 and this year's committee chair is Jennifer Berkemeier of the Fillmore Detroit.
The Ambassador program is an on-going follow up to the initial membership commitment. It pairs new Chamber members with an experienced volunteer who acts as a mentor introducing them to a myriad of affinity programs, networking opportunities and resources available through membership. The Ambassador of the Year, however, takes this guiding role to a much deeper level. "[The Ambassador of the Year] is a projection of the philosophy of the Chamber ... an extension of the Chamber," says Robin Reinhart, DRC member relations coordinator. Berkemeier's efforts as an ambassador have certainly showcased this. By demonstrating how to fully utilize membership, Berkemeier, as Reinhart said, "enhances the Chamber experience by adding a personal touch."
Berkemeier joined the Chamber when she made a career switch from within Live Nation, a live events promotion company, and came to work as special events director at its Fillmore Detroit theater. After her relocation, Berkemeier decided the best way to become familiar with this unknown area and its business etiquette while rustling up interest for the Fillmore was to join the Chamber and begin networking.
