On Oct. 12, 1972, a plane carrying members of a Uruguyan rugby team, relatives, and friends crashed on a snowy peak in the Andes. Of the 45 aboard, 35 lived through the crash, but only 16 subsequently survived, 19 others succumbing to wounds, despair, and an avalanche that struck the wreckage a few weeks later.
