An unlikely wine from an unlikely wine region has won a prestigious silver medal at one of the largest wine competitions in the United States. Great Land Wines Ltd. of Haines was awarded the medal in the commercial fruit wine division of the Indy International Wine Competition in July for their Zwiebel wine made with onions. Sixty expert wine judges at the competition this year evaluated more than 3,260 wines from all over the world. Both amateur and commercial wines from all across the nation and from as far as Australia, Italy, Romania and 12 other countries vied with Alaska for coveted awards at the Indiana State Fairgrounds Expo Hall in July. The Indiana Wine Grape Council sponsors the yearly competition.
