The unemployment rate is derived by subtracting the total number of employed individuals from the total labor force. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, unemployed persons are considered to be individuals who "do not have a job. have actively looked for work in the past four weeks, and are currently available for work." Individuals who have quit looking for work beyond that point are dropped from the labor force count and not included in the primary unemployment rate. To account for these changes in the labor force. BLS publishes several variants of the unemployment rate. allowing researchers to capture more precise data, based on their research needs.
