Recent Projects: In 1901, Italian prospector Felix Pedro discovered gold in the Fairbanks area. Now, more than 100 years later, the gold mining tradition continues. Nestled in the hills 25 miles northeast of Fairbanks is the Fairbanks Gold Mining Inc.'s Fort Knox Mine, Alaska's largest operating gold mine. Fort Knox is an a open-pit mine operating on a massive scale. The mine moves 200,000 tons each day and by mid-2005 had already produced 3.4 million ounces of gold since commercial production began in 1997.
