New businesses come to Alaska: amid the downturn, optimism remains.

Businesses setting down roots often look for locations where they most likely will prosper. For years, Alaska has been rich soil for many companies and small businesses because of its ideal location for sea- and air-cargo transport between North America, Asia and Europe. With advancements in transportation and technology, Alaska has become more accessible and is viewed as a great place to set up a business. This year, several companies will take up residence in the state to grow within their distinctive sectors and succeed economically.

ANCHORAGE AND MAT-SU SEE DEVELOPMENT

In spite of growing economic woes, there is a positive outlook for Alaska's economic stability. The Anchorage Economic Development Corp. (AEDC) recently reported the results of a business confidence index survey conducted by the McDowell Group. AEDC is one of Alaska's Regional Development Organizations (ARDORS), and is a private, nonprofit organization initiated in 1987 with the goal of encouraging growth and diversity within the Anchorage economy. This organization serves as a sort of meeting ground for entrepreneurs and member businesses throughout the state. It is responsible for assisting Anchorage in the retention and/ or expansion of businesses inside the state and Outside, attracts industries to the state and generates opportunities for investors through counseling, communication facilitation and hosting events. These factors bring together prospective owners with the various resources Alaska has available.

According to AEDC, the purpose of the survey was to assess factors that affect Anchorage businesses and the overall economy and formulate a statistical measure of business confidence called the Anchorage Business Confidence Index. A total of 103 organizations and businesses responded to the survey conducted in December 2008. Respondents represented a broad cross-section of the Anchorage business community with sectors in transportation, professional services, engineering, architecture, oil and gas exploration and mining.

The index indicated that for 2009 the business community anticipates some growth compared to last year. Also, businesses have a positive outlook for gross sales and net profits. Index results point out that companies have enough confidence to believe both these factors will increase this year.
