US Airways Group filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for the second time in two years. The Arlington, Va.-based airline's largest hub is at Charlotte/Douglas International Airport. It has about 7,400 North Carolina employees--about 75% in Charlotte. The airline says it stuck to the reorganization plan it outlined after it emerged from bankruptcy in March 2003, cutting costs by $2 billion. But fuel costs rose more than expected, and low-cost competitors pushed fares too low for the airline to get the needed revenue boost from domestic flights.
