British Airways, OpenSkies

British Airways' new carrier, OpenSkies, is due to start daily flights from New York to Brussels and Paris in June, taking advantage of the "open skies" pact that becomes effective in March. (The pact allows any American or European airline to fly between any European city and any U.S. city.) OpenSkies flights will be operated by narrow-body Boeing 757s with winglets for longer range. The aircraft will carry up to 82 passengers in three cabins: business, premium economy and economy. There was industry speculation that OpenSkies (until now known as Project Lauren) would be a business-class-only airline designed to compete with the likes of Silverjet, Eos, and L'Avion. With 52 premium seats in a narrow-body plane, OpenSkies is clearly a way to reach a similar niche market; evoking the comfort and intimacy of the Boeing 707s and Douglas DC8s of the mid-1960s, in the days before business class was invented. Look out for more OpenSkies services between New York and Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Madrid and Milan by the end of next year. Jan 24, 2008
