Airbus, Qantas Airways Investigators have determined that an Airbus A330's weather radar capabilities had been degraded before the jet encountered severe turbulence last year, after failing to detect a region of convective crystallizing ice. Seven occupants of the A330-300, operated by Qantas Airways, were injured as it met turbulence at flight level 380 while approaching the northern coast of Malaysia. During the 20s disturbance the aircraft was subjected to vertical forces ranging from 1.59g to minus 0.48g, and strong changes in the wind speed and direction. Jun 30, 2010
Alaska Airlines Alaska Airlines will inaugurate service between San Jose, Calif., and Lihue, on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, on March 27, 2011, and between Oakland, Calif., and Lihue beginning March 28, 2011. Fares for the new routes start at $179 each way for tickets purchased by July 9, 2010, and travel through May 17, 2011. The new flights will complement the airline's existing Hawaii service from San Jose and Oakland to Kahului, Maui, and Kona, on the Big Island of Hawaii, and new flights between Sacramento, Calif., and Kahului, which started in March of this year. Anchorage International Airport After more than a decade of work, the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport completed the final touches of a multi-million-dollar renovation just in time for summer travelers. The new aesthetics of the airport will catch the attention of many, but the renovations also have opened up space for more dining options. HumpyOs Great Alaskan Alehouse, a favorite eatery and pub among AnchorageOs downtown dining scene, will open up an outpost in concourse B. Additionally, Norton Sound Seafood House, opening in concourse C, will offer a seafood menu designed by AnchorageOs award-winning chef and TV personality Al Levinsohn.
