EgyptAir

EgyptAir, now a Star Alliance member, serves 14 destinations in Africa and soon will add Dar Es Salaam, Abidjan and Conakry to its network. A new terminal capable of handling 11 million passengers annually will open in Cairo in November and be used exclusively by Star member carriers. 7/10/2008

EgyptAir, Star Alliance

EgyptAir will become Star Alliance's 21st member today in a ceremony in Cairo. The carrier said it fulfilled all minimum requirements to become a Star member in fewer than nine months. It hopes to benefit from feed provided by Star members to bring further traffic to Cairo and Star hopes to be able to extend its presence in Africa via its newest member. 7/10/2008

El Al Israel Airlines

El Al Israel Airlines said on Wednesday it will raise its fuel surcharges from July 14 by up to USD$50 due to continued sharp increases in jet fuel. Surcharges will rise by an average of 5 percent, or USD$20 for short-haul flights, USD$30 for medium-haul and USD$50 for long distances, El Al said. El Al has raised fares and fuel surcharges numerous time this year. In May, fares rose an average of 6.5 percent while fuel surcharges were boosted by USD$40 per flight segment. Similar moves were taken in January, February and March. El Al said jet fuel costs have risen by some 20 percent since its last update as the price of oil has jumped. 7/9/2008
