Air Methods, Eurocopter Air Methods Awarded Contract to Provide Services to St. Mary's Hospital CareFlight. Air Methods Corporation (AIRM), the global leader in air medical transportation, announced today it was selected as the air medical operator and began service for St. Mary's Hospital and Regional Medical Center's CareFlight program in Grand Junction, Colorado. This new contract has significant historical relevance since St. Mary's was Air Methods' first-ever air medical program and where the Company transported its first patient in 1980. Under the new agreement effective November 1, Air Methods operates a Eurocopter AS350 helicopter based at the main hospital campus, and a Beechcraft King Air airplane based at Grand Junction Regional Airport. Air Methods employs the assigned pilots and mechanics and provides communications services for the program through its national Communications Center. In 1980, the St. Mary's air medical program went into service with a new Bell 206-L1 helicopter. Mr. Roy Morgan, Air Methods' founder, was the pilot who flew the first St. Mary's air medical team and Air Methods' first patient, the same day the program went into service. Boeing Boeing Increases 787 Production Rate. Boeing employees last week rolled out the first 787 Dreamliner built at the new rate of five-airplanes-per-month. The airplane is the 83rd 787 to be built. "This accomplishment, doubling our production rate in one year, is the result of the combined efforts of thousands of men and women across Boeing and at our partners," said Larry Loftis, vice president and general manager of the 787 program. "The entire 787 team is focused on meeting our commitments. They've gotten even smarter in how they build this airplane and applied real ingenuity in making our processes and tools more efficient." Boeing earlier this year increased the rate from 2.5 to 3.5 airplanes per month and is on track to achieve a planned 10-per-month rate by late 2013. The program production rate accounts for airplanes built at Boeing South Carolina and Everett, including the Temporary Surge Line that was activated earlier this year in Everett. Boeing employees are using teamwork and new technologies to meet production rate increases. Approximately 500 employee involvement teams are actively pursuing improvement efforts across the program. Teams are led by employees working to find ways to improve efficiency, quality, safety and growth. As just one example illustrative of the efforts happening across the production system, a team developed a small piece of protective equipment to cover the electronic actuators that help move the horizontal stabilizer. The plastic covering is now used across the program to protect the actuators during the production process. In addition, this small change has resulted in quicker production completion times. "The work our teams are doing to continuously improve is making this program more efficient," added Loftis. "Their commitment to doing the job with high quality and making improvements to the system is outstanding." Among the new tools being deployed to improve productivity in the Final Assembly areas are Orbital Drilling machines. The machines are used to drill holes to attach the wings to the center fuselage section of the airplane. The drilling technique is unique in that the cutter rotates in a circular motion to carve out the hole, rather than a conventional drill that cuts straight into the material. Benefits of the machines include improved precision and time savings for mechanics. A third benefit is improved safety as the machines require lower thrust and torque. To date, 35 787s have been delivered to eight airlines and the program has more than 800 unfilled orders with 58 customers worldwide. Nov 12, 2012
Boeing, AVIC Boeing and AVIC to Collaborate on Interior Supply Capability in China. Boeing and Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC), China's largest state-owned aviation company, announced today they will work together to expand AVIC capabilities to include interior commodities such as passenger seats, galleys, lavatories and in-flight entertainment systems for commercial airplanes. Geng Ruguang, executive vice president of AVIC, and Stan Deal, vice president and general manager of Boeing Commercial Airplanes Supply Chain Management and Operations, signed a memorandum of understanding for this interior payload initiative at the 2012 Zhuhai Airshow. "This cooperation will enhance AVIC as a competitive supplier of world class airplane interior payload products, as well as help Boeing deliver more competitive products to its customers," said Geng Ruguang. "This expands the fields of cooperation for both companies, which will further strengthen and deepen our strategic partnership." "AVIC has been an important partner to Boeing for many years, and this mutually beneficial collaboration will further enhance their capabilities, while adding value for Boeing and its customers," said Deal. "AVIC's ability to develop and deliver world-class payload interiors to airline customers increases their options and improves Boeing's competitiveness." Global demand for Boeing airplanes is at an all-time high with more than 4,200 airplanes in the company's backlog. The collaboration with AVIC will support China's growing aerospace manufacturing industry and expand opportunities for airlines around the world to continue to customize airplane interiors to create market differentiation.
