The National Defense Industrial Association Robert H. Goddard Award is presented annually to an outstanding cadet in mathematical sciences at the U.S. Air Force Academy, in Colorado Springs, Colo. Goddard, a pioneer in the field of rocketry, developed a liquid fuel rocket and a gyroscopic rocket steering mechanism. He is credited with having fired the first rocket to travel faster than sound.
