Air India, Airbus

Air India last week launched its first freighter dedicated to European service. The converted Airbus A310 will be one of two operating four-times-weekly flights from Mumbai to Frankfurt and Paris Charles de Gaulle via Bangalore and Chennai. The A310s were converted by EADS at a cost of $7.95 million each, AI said. Chairman and MD V. Thulasidas said, "Post the merger, cargo is going to be one of the most important strategic business units for Air India. Our vision is to see a full-fledged Air India cargo airline." AI currently holds a 9%-11% share of exports and a 5%-7% market share in imports. "Owing to the upsurge in the import-export demand coined with the Open Sky policy and globalization factors, Air India has decided to ramp-up cargo operations," it said. Jul 3, 2007

All Nippon Airways

All Nippon Airways ANA and Tokyo-based Overseas Courier Service announced they jointly will develop a new international express delivery service called BEAM that will focus primarily on Asian deliveries. BEAM initially will offer overnight express delivery from Osaka and Tokyo to Shanghai by using ANA cargo flights on the Tokyo Haneda-Osaka-Shanghai route and later will expand to other Chinese cities. Atlas Air

Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings, Inc. , a leading provider of global air cargo services, today announced that its subsidiary, scheduled-service operator Polar Air Cargo Worldwide, Inc. , closed on a strategic transaction with DHL Express that includes the acquisition of an equity stake in Polar for $150 million in cash and a landmark 20-year commercial arrangement, with opportunities for AAWW companies to provide additional service and for future growth. DHL yesterday launched next-day express delivery from New York JFK to nine European destinations, available Monday to Thursday.
