US air express revenues top $31 billion despite flat traffic. US air express revenues reached a record $31.3 billion in 2005, a 4.7% increase over 2004, but traffic remained flat, according to an industry study released last week. The Air Cargo Management Group's annual "US Domestic Air Freight and Express Industry Performance Analysis" notes that revenues are growing steadily, particularly for FedEx and UPS. "However, traffic volume for the industry at 15.3 billion ton-miles, and the number of shipments moving through the major express companies at 6.858 million per day, have not changed appreciably since reaching a peak in 2000," ACMG Project Director Robert Dahl said. Air Cargo Management Group's annual report points to price increases and rising fuel surcharges imposed by FedEx and UPS as the key drivers of the revenue growth. The duo increased their domestic express revenues by $1 billion and $400 million respectively in 2005, ACMG said. But the domestic US express shipment market grew just 0.2% last year and is 1.7% below 2000 levels. Jul 25, 2006

US domestic air cargo market has been flat for most of this decade, with trucks now transporting a significant amount of freight that once traveled by air. The ACMG analysis also notes problems related to the integration of consolidating companies in the US express sector. "Such mergers can prove difficult, as evidenced by DHL's continuing struggles with the integration of Airborne," Air Cargo Management Group's annual report Project Director Robert Dahl said.
