Alaska may have extreme climate. And parts of Alaska may be isolated. But this state does have a lot to offer, as many convention attendees are finding out as they travel to the Great Land on business and pleasure.

In Anchorage alone, about 479 meetings were booked in 2001, providing more than $81 million in economic impact to the community. According to the Anchorage Convention and Visitors Bureau, this figure was down slightly from initial projections due to decrease d travel to Anchorage due to concerns over the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Still, many are finding Alaska a great place to attend a convention, and there are plenty of great hotels and other facilities in this state able and willing to take over the role of hosting conventions. A look through this directory will show 85 of the state's top meeting and convention facilities. These facilities offer all kinds of amenities and services--everything from convention planning, to group rates, to sleeping rooms, to trade show management, to teleconference phones, to meeting rooms to catering to entertainment.

Many of the facilities will pick you up from the airport. Some have restaurants or lounges/bars. Many offer room service. Some have fitness rooms or pools. Many offer in-room data phones.

Those planning conventions have a variety of places to choose from. Anchorage and Fairbanks are always popular destinations. But facilities are also available at Cooper Landing, Denali National Park, Dillingham, Dutch Harbor, Girdwood, Homer, Juneau, Kenai, Ketchikan, King Salmon, Kodiak, Nome, Palmer, Seward, Sitka, Skagway, Soldotna, Talkeetna, Valdez and Wasilla.
