The violence that began sweeping through Kenya in December after a disputed presidential election is just the latest turmoil in subSaharan Africa. It's no coincidence that one of the poorest regions in the world is also home to some of the most oppressive regimes and violent conflicts.

As the graph shows, even the wealthiest countries in that region barely top the world's average G.D.P. per capita and come nowhere near that of the U.S, which stands at $42,000.
