Obama signs bill allowing exports of commercial satellites President Barack Obama signed a bill into law Thursday that makes communications satellites legal to sell to other countries. The satellites had faced export restrictions under a previous law that classified the satellites as weapons. "Treating commercial satellites and components as if they were lethal weapons, regardless of whether they're going to friend or foe, has gravely harmed U.S. space manufacturers," said Rep. Howard L. Berman, D-Calif. Jan 10, 2013

Private space travel will continue to make progress in 2013 as three major companies are likely to bid for NASA contracts, this feature says. Space Exploration Technologies has scheduled a cargo flight for its Dragon capsule to the International Space Station in May. Boeing and Sierra Nevada Corp. are also designing space capsules. Students at David Thibodaux STEM Magnet Academy in Lafayette, La., elect to follow career pathways in fields such as engineering and biomedicine. "We really focus on high-wage, high-skill careers," principal Jeff Debetaz said. "Students do have to choose a pathway, but there is a certain point before they get to some of the more focused courses where they can switch. I think the biggest difference with us is that the classes are a lot more focused, a lot more specialized." Jan 7, 2013

NASA NASA, industry laud progress on commercial crew plans. NASA and its industry partners say substantial gains have been made toward the goal of building commercial spacecraft that can ferry astronauts to the International Space Station.
