Afghan surge could help defense companies, experts say. President Barack Obama has already announced plans to send 17,000 additional troops to Afghanistan, but the top U.S. commander there is asking for more aircraft and civilian support as well. Afghanistan's mountainous terrain and lack of infrastructure make it quite different from Iraq, according to military experts, so equipping the troops for their new mission could delay a long-anticipated downturn in defense spending. North Korea

The U.S. special envoy urged North Korea Saturday to halt its belligerent rhetoric after the communist country said it could not guarantee the safety of South Korea's passenger jets flying near its airspace. North Korea escalated tensions Thursday by saying the safety of commercial aircraft would be in question if annual joint U.S.-South Korean military maneuvers went ahead as planned Monday.
