Poland to select unmanned air system Poland is expected to begin the selection process for a medium-altitude long-endurance unmanned air system next year. Sources at the show say that three Israeli manufacturers will offer products. The Polish defence department is preparing the tender that will initially include between two and four systems. Poland's ministry of defence has issued a request for proposals to five bidders for its air force's lead-in fighter trainer programme. Contenders comprise Alenia Aermacchi's M-346, the BAE Systems Hawk AJT, the Korea Aerospace Industries/Lockheed Martin T-50P, Aero Vodochody's L-159T1 and Patria's ex-Finnish air force Hawk 51/51A. The companies have until 29 July to respond. Eight trainers must be delivered before December 2014. A second tranche of eight, upgraded for combat, will arrive by December 2016. Jun 20, 2011

Afghan Air Force Afghan Airmen Complete First Phase of Pilot Training on Raytheon-led Contract. The first 16 Afghan Air Force (AAF) students recently completed English-immersion training on a contract led by Raytheon Company to provide fixed- and rotary-wing pilot training for up to 80 Afghan airmen. The students are now attending aviation ground school, the second phase of the four-part pilot training program. The $42.8 million, three-year training contract supports NATO Air Training Command-Afghanistan under the U.S. Army's Warfighter Field Operations Customer Support (FOCUS) contract. Jun 23, 2011

Elbit Systems Elbit Systems to Supply DIRCM Systems to the Italian Air Force. Elbit Systems Ltd., announced today, at the Paris Air Show, that it was awarded a contract valued in excess of $15 million by Elettronica S.p.A ("Elettronica") to participate in a program to supply the ELT/572 DIRCM (Directed Infra-Red Countermeasures) system for installation on various platforms of the Italian Air Force, including the C130J, C27J and AW101.
