Communications: Beware of the No. 1 reason for CEO failure here--believing you have already spoken about the company's ambition and strategic choices enough.

Speaking consistently and continually about what is most important to the company can influence the collective mindset of your people. Wherever you go, talk about the key messages --the company's new ambition, strategic choices and standards --until you think you can't talk about them anymore. People start to believe when they hear you consistently saying the same things and when they see you making good on your promises. Your integrity and accountability will enroll them even more than the actual words you speak.
