THE PERMANENT COUNCIL of the Organization of American States (OAS) welcomed Honduran president Manuel Zelaya Rosales to its protocolary session on February 19. Zelaya spoke about the central theme of the 39th Ordinary Period of Sessions of the OAS General Assembly, which will take place in the Honduran city of San Pedro Sula, June 1-3 this year.

On this occasion, the Ministers of Foreign Relations from the 34 member states of the OAS will analyze the topic of "Non-violence with Democracy and Participation," proposed by the host country.

The Honduran president maintained that it is urgent "to confront the symbols of violence that are weighing down many of our societies," and that the San Pedro Sula meeting should be a opportune moment for "confronting the causes, finding peaceful solutions, preventing conflicts, and combating violence: this should be our mare objective," he said.

"This philosophy of the good, the moral, and the practice of non-violence should be a commitment of States, of peoples, and of religions. It will be a great honor for us to receive you in our country to address such an important topic. On that...
