In 1985 and 1986, as many as 1,000 people at a time -including Diane Keaton, Nick Nolte and Jessica Lange-were at work on films in Wilmington ["Will The State's Film Deal Go Down?" April 19881. That's back when Dino De Laurentiis was trying to turn the city into Hollywood East.

But after a bout with bankruptcy, De Laurentiis Entertainment Group sold its 32-acre complex to Los Angeles-based Carolco Pictures Inc. - the people that brought you Arnold Schwarzenegger's Total Recall and all those Sylvester Stallone Rambo flicks.

The deal went down last May Since then, Carolco, with 1989 revenues of $150 million, has arrived with a brand-new script.

"I'm kind of like a motel. I'm renting room and equipment," says Kent Swaim, who has 20 employees, compared with the 200 or so DEG had in 1986. Carolco has as many as a dozen films going on...
