It is important to acknowledge and pay special thanks to those people who both encour-
aged me to begin the process of writing this book and provided assistance along the
way—both moral assistance and encouragement, and more tangible assistance in the
form of being contributing authors, heading up research, providing legal background,
and being there to manage the process of editorial and general support.
In the first category are those colleagues who talked to me in the early days of
planning the book and gave me the encouragement to move forward. They include T. J.
Greene, Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego; Greg Battersby, Grimes & Bat-
tersby; Lanning Bryer, Ladas & Perry; Rick Kurnit, Frankfurt Kurnit Klein & Selz; Larry
McFarland, Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton; and Michael Perlmutter. Also, special
thanks to Jonathan Reichman and the firm of Kenyon & Kenyon for the contributions
they made in assembling their annual review on international rights of publicity entitled
Getting the Deal Through: Right of Publicity, which their firm updates annually.
In the category of contributing authors, I owe special thanks to Jeffrey Anderson
and David Noble. Mr. Anderson is the author of Chapter 12: Challenges in Rights of
Publicity Valuation. Mr. Noble made substantial revisions to and is the co-author of
Chapter 11: Valuation of Rights of Publicity and Other Intellectual Property Assets. Both
these gentlemen aided substantially in the editing of chapters within Part III: Valuation
of Right of Publicity and Pricing of Deals. Their help was invaluable.
As for the research and editorial process, Jemma Samala has been with me since
the days before the book was begun (quite literally). She has been there for the genesis,
the gestation, the birthing, and the revisions, rewriting, and grooming of the final prod-
uct. Without Jemma, this book would not be what it is today.
Legal research is a critical component of the first part of this book and was con-
ducted by Michelle Evenson of the Thomas Jefferson School of Law. She was aided
in the early part of the process by Stephanie Ferguson of the same law school. Both
Ms. Evenson and Ms. Ferguson are extremely knowledgeable and are both soon-to-be
lawyers in their own right as they finish the J.D. program at Thomas Jefferson. While
they worked under Jemma Samala, their ability to operate on their own, collecting and
sifting through literally mounds and volumes of legal documents, was monumental.
Finally, everyone in the firm pitched in to provide editorial support for the book.
And my Administrative Assistant Rosemary Delaney helped coordinate input from
Joshua Cawthorn, Susan Bailey, and the rest of the staff. Also, heartfelt thanks to David
Settimi, who helped bring order out of chaos in our operations while I was consumed
from time to time in writing this book.
And finally, a special thanks to Lacy J. Lodes, our former associate, who was instru-
mental in the very early days in focusing me on the creation of this book.
