Acknowledgments
The authors would like to acknowledge and thank the partners of their
respective law firms. Writing a book like this is a big commitment. It takes
a lot of time, and some of that time unavoidably takes away from other
matters. We want to thank our partners for supporting our effort. That
support took many forms, but an important one is that other deadlines
have been extended and an occasional tardy deadline has been forgiven.
This book would not have been possible without such forbearance from our
colleagues. We believe that an effort such as ours in writing this book is for
the greater good and, in the end, when the scores are tallied, the benefit
from our time and effort in writing this book will more than outweigh the
costs of the occasional distraction that writing has caused us. Happily,
those we practice law with seem to see it in the same way that we do. So
a sincere “thank you” to our partners and colleagues.
Also, Kevin wishes to thank Andrea Orth, Nicole Grimm, and Daniel
Organ for legal research supporting Chapter 4, and Nicole Grimm and
Daniel Organ for legal research supporting Chapter 5. For myself, I want
to thank Shaun Van Horn for his cheerful acceptance of a number of
thankless tasks relating to all of the chapters in material ways. He has
been a joy to work with. And finally, for all of us, we want to thank Ed
Roney, our managing editor. This book was Ed’s idea, and his organiza-
tional skills and tireless efforts made it happen.
