is book encompasses about 35 years of my professional life
after law school graduation—20 years as a civil litigation attorney
and law rm founder, partner, and principal and then 15 years as
an author, researcher, consultant, and educator. Since this book
attempts to integrate both practical and academic perspectives on
American law rms, my dual-track experiences hopefully yield a
more balanced view of law rms than currently exists in articles,
law journals, and books. In this eort to blend the insights and wis-
dom of practitioners and academics, my views have been imprinted
by literally hundreds of exceptional lawyers, law school professors,
deans, journalists, analysts, and law rm leaders. I am indebted to
each of them.
In writing this book, I have beneted from many of the best minds
at law schools and in the legal services industry. William Hender-
son at the Indiana University Maurer School of Law has produced
not only an enormous amount of data and research regarding law
rms but also has led many innovations in law rms and corporate
legal departments. My interactions with Professor Henderson have
strongly inuenced the themes and prescriptions in this book. Law
rm consultants Peter Zeughauser and Kent Zimmerman at e
Zeughauser Group also have shared, over many years of friendship,
their keen insights into law rm leadership and operations.
My understanding of law rms’ challenges has been greatly
enhanced by multiple meetings with law rm managing partners,
