I agree with Luis Rodriguez's column "Press 1 for English" (September issue). We are spurred on by our leaders to believe that we are so insecure in our identity as a nation that we need laws institutionalizing English as the official language.

The political powerbrokers continue to use race, language, cultural differences, and fear to divide and isolate people.

This country has existed for 230 years because we have accepted diversity in people and customs, not by pandering to extreme nationalist pressure from the political right. That so many Democratic Senators abandoned their principles to vote for English as the official language is not much of a surprise. I expect this kind of narrow-minded policy from the nationalist zealots in the Republican Party, but...
