Graduate school students across the University of California (UC) voted to transform their union when the Academic Workers for a Democratic Union took all 10 executive board positions. This local, the largest graduate school union in the country, represents 12,000 students at nine UC campuses (Labor Notes, May 10, 2011).

In another victory for graduate students, the National Labor Relations Board has declared that teaching and research assistants at New York University should be considered as employees, thus clearing the way to unionize which was denied them earlier because they work at a private university (http://chronicle.com, June 21, 2011)
